Millionaire Kids
I heard some interesting data, the other day about children under the age of twenty who had begun his own business and have become a great success. Some had begun their efforts as young as 6 years. I was surprised. In one of those nights where there is nothing that I want to see on TV I sat at my computer and Google "young entrepreneurs" and "children in business." WOW!
Yo-Yo String and the young entrepreneur
Then I began to think again (which at my age is a lot of thinking) about my cousin, Jeffrey. Jeffrey was one of those guys could not sit still for five minutes. He was the most annoying child imaginable. But Jeffrey was a businessman "young" as I think about it. Yo-yos were very popular in the 1950s and strings are always breaking. So Jeffrey (age 7) had an idea to sell yo-yo strings …. 3 by 5 cents. Oddly enough he made some money, partly because children need new strings and partly because I was so upset that all purchases of channels only to have to stop bothering us. Maybe his marketing skills were not the greatest or perhaps too hard sell, but whatever it was Jeffrey was successful. Today is an architect and runs his own company and is much less annoying.
Children identify
We all know that children are motivated by money. Money can buy things, and kids love it. It is difficult to teach children about the value of a dollar less than they earn for themselves. We pay for the work around the house but that does not have the same effect as its arrival with an idea and then act on it. Therefore, their total involvement. They are the boss. It makes a big difference. It is creative, education, builds confidence and lays a foundation that will last a lifetime. But how can a child go to start a business?
Bumble or guidance?
Well, there are two ways. Can bumble through it making many mistakes and get discouraged when it becomes too difficult or they can get orientation. In my Googleing I found a product that was designed by a mom of business in Phoenix, AZ, just to teach her own daughter and spirit business to prepare for the future. It was so successful that she decided to bring it to market after testing in other children. She has been written up in most business magazines in the U.S. and has even appeared on Fox Business News, and the company is only 6 months old. What I find even more interesting than children who receives very little exposure to business skills in our schools. Why not? Taking into account the majority of children in school today will have to earn life as adults, why is not this taught from an early age?
Our children are taught the arts, sciences and the 3 R's, but why not teach business skill sets at an early age? This is truly one of the things they will need to function as productive adults and especially in a global economy. Even if they do not become entrepreneurs do not have to be aware of how businesses run? Maybe I'm crazy, but I do not understand.
If you have the opportunity to go to the Internet and Google in children or young business entrepreneurs and I am sure it will be as surprised as me. Besides the fact that there was no Jeffrey thought of my cousin and his yo-yo strings for many years. It proved a happy and informative evening for me.
